Episode 202 – 09/10/2026

On this week’s Winchester Now:

  • The Rotary Clarendon Marathon, from Salisbury to Winchester along the Clarendon Way, took place last Sunday. Winchester Radio’s team was there, providing a music roadshow and the race commentary, cheering runners over the line at King’s School. Plus our volunteer Mary Blaxland was at the finish line too and spoke to runners, spectators and organisers about the fun of this annual not-for-profit community event.
  • News-in-brief:
    • New robotic equipment, funded by donations from the Hampshire Medical Fund charity, is helping stroke patients in Winchester with their recovery. Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in the UK. The innovative robotic technology uses interactive games, to engage patients in tasks which help to stimulate hand and arm function, and enable the brain to relearn lost functions.
    • The Orthopaedic Centre at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital is celebrating its first anniversary, having already treated more than 1,200 patients. The NHS Trust says the purpose-built centre has increased its capacity to provide treatments such as hip and knee replacements, helping reduce waiting lists.
    • Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has joined with the NHS to raise awareness of the fire risks associated with emollient creams. Publicity resources are being shared through pharmacies and GP surgeries, to ensure safety information reaches those most at risk. Emollients are creams, lotions, sprays and ointments, which are used to treat a range of skin conditions.
    • Starting this week, Flu and Covid vaccinations are available across Hampshire for people aged 65 or over – along with pregnant women, frontline health care workers, care home residents, and adults with long-term health conditions. Covid vaccinations are also available now for anyone with a weakened immune system. Health bosses are urging eligible people to come forward and book their jabs now.
    • Trinity Winchester, which supports people in the local area who are experiencing homelessness, has made a plea for help with its clothing supplies, which are running low. Trinity is appealing for good quality donations including socks and warm clothing for the winter months ahead.
    • A local hero is being sought to help switch on Winchester’s Christmas lights on Thursday 19th November. Winchester BID is again looking for someone who goes the extra mile for others, or makes Winchester a better place.  Nominations close on 31st October. Meanwhile work has begun this week on the Winchester Cathedral Christmas market.
  • Summer Cook went to the High Street and asked passers-by what they loved most about Winchester.
