On Winchester Now this week:

  • A group of fundraisers is hoping to top £50,000 this year for cancer charities in memory of a Winchester woman who died of the disease. 
  • Losing a loved one is always hard but the festive season can make those feelings of grief even tougher. Winchester Hospice is inviting people to a “Light-Up a Life” service on Monday in the hope of bringing comfort.
  • News-in-brief:
    • Train services face disruption next week – with industrial action by the union Aslef.  
    • Workshops are taking place on Friday and Saturday to explore plans to redevelop the Sir John Moore Barracks. It’s the second stage of a public consultation into proposals for the site.
    • Lloyds Bank in Alresford has shut its doors. It was one of 21 branch closures across the UK.  
    • More than 500 knives have been taken off the streets of Hampshire as part of a national police operation to tackle knife crime.  
    • A new facility has opened in Winchester to help young people with eating disorders.  
    • An update on the Fabric of Winchester project led by the charity St Johns to create memory quilts.
  • Alresford’s first lantern procession took place last week along with the annual event at Winchester Cathedral. We hear from some of those who took part.

    • To 80-year-old Mary Dunn who’s raised close to £14,000 for the Hampshire Hospitals Charity and Cancer Research.  
    • To the 19 teams who took part in Home Start Winchester’s annual quiz recently, raising £3,000.  
    • To Winchester Cathedral’s boy choristers who are Grammy nominees after they sang on the soundtrack of a video game.

  • The Round Table Santa Sleigh takes to the streets this week and will visit 16 areas of our city.  We hear from one of the organisers.
