On Winchester Now this week:
- Walkers set off from Winchester Cathedral on Monday this week for the first part of a 143 mile walk across the south from Winchester to Canterbury by anti-poverty charity, Christians Against Poverty highlighting the impact the rising cost of living is having on people in the UK who are struggling financially, but also shining a light on the support available to help, including locally in Winchester through the CAP Debt Centre partnering with Hope Church.

- To everyone who took part in the Great South Run last Sunday, including those running for local good causes.
- To the schools, churches and people giving Harvest donations to support charity Winchester Beacon, the city’s two Community Pantries in Stanmore and Winnall, plus the Winchester Basics Bank. More donations are still needed to help those who are struggling.
- To the Winchester Soroptimists for their successful charity Harvest Supper and Quiz night.
- To the caring volunteers at the Parish of St. Peter’s and the Winchester Martyrs whose efforts were celebrated at the weekend at a Volunteers’ Tea Party, and to the volunteers at the church who organised and baked cakes to make the special get-together possible.
- To everyone who came and supported charity Winchester Radio’s recent fundraising coffee morning – we raised £498. Thanks also to Rick Stein Winchester for kindly providing the refreshments and cakes plus a raffle prize, and to all the other businesses who gave prizes for the raffle.
- We hear how families, businesses and schools are being encouraged to set up ‘cycle buses’. The idea is for cyclists to ride together as a group. - Winchester City Council’s Cabinet meeting on Tuesday this week has approved more than £1 million to fund a number of community infrastructure projects.
- It’s ‘Household Support Fund Awareness Week’, and Hampshire County Council is encouraging families to check their eligibility for support by visiting the connect4communities.org website.
- Winchester Fashion Week continues with activities this week, culminating in a Grand Finale Catwalk Show this Saturday night.
- Winchester Walking Football Club is holding an Open Day this Saturday from 1pm, with a special Exhibition Match at 2:30pm, at the University of Winchester Sports Stadium behind the Winchester Sport and Leisure Centre, at Bar End. The Club is open to all genders, aged 50 and over.
- The Head of Paths from leading walking charity The Ramblers talks to us about a recent report highlighting the inequalities of access preventing everyone being able to enjoy the great outdoors. We learn how the public can get involved in campaigning for positive change and in giving time to do a range of volunteer roles to assist the charity.
