On Winchester Now this week:
- Campaigners are celebrating the announcement that a lido is the City Council’s preferred proposal to replace the former River Park Leisure Centre. Mary Blaxland went along to this week’s public engagement event to find out more and hear the reaction.
- Everycare is once-again hosting TechFest at St Barnabas Church on 15th September – an event to help those aged over 65 struggling with getting to grips with new technology. Summer Cook spoke to Karen Whitmill about the event.

- In a campaign to bring back a bus service between Winchester and Eastleigh, a community walk has been organised by the “Back Our Buses” group. The Big Bus March will be held next Saturday, 12th of September, starting from the Co-Op in Colden Common at 10am, and finishing in Eastleigh.
- Fundraising campaigns have been launched in Winchester to help victims of the recent devastating floods in Nepal, which resulted in more than 1000 deaths. Winchester’s Nepalese community has come together to raise funds for disaster relief, and Winchester Rotary is also raising money to support charities that provide help.
- Major roadworks begin next week at the Pitt Roundabout, which links Badger Farm Road and Romsey Road. Drainage works, running overnight from 8pm to 6am, will start on Monday 7th September for up to 3 weeks – diversions will be in place.
- Meanwhile next weekend sees another weekend closure of the M3 junction 9. It follows two other closures over the summer.
- The annual round of flu vaccinations has begun in Hampshire, as the NHS prepares to protect people from flu, and reduce pressure on health services this winter. Jabs are now being made available to pregnant women, children aged 2 and 3, and primary and secondary school pupils. Eligible people will be contacted by their GP practice in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, the Covid-19 vaccination programme starts next month.
- More than 100 members of Kings Worthy’s Scouting groups will take on a trek this weekend to raise money for a new home. Groups from the youngest Squirrels through to the oldest Explorers, will walk different distances to raise money to build a replacement to their current hall which is over 50 years old.
- And, one of Winchester’s oldest village fetes returns this weekend. The Littleton & Harestock Show first began more than 100 years ago. The Show takes place this Saturday, 5th September, with various stalls, and entertainments . Winchester Radio will also have a stall at the show, so why not stop by and say hello – and you can try your hand at reading a news bulletin too.
